| | How do we ensure GWS has a minimal impact upon the environment?
GWS has taken a number of actions to ensure that we are using the best
techniques available to minimise our impacts upon the environment. Examples of
these actions include:
- Development, and implementation of an Environmental Management System
(EMS); we have an EMS in place that identifies areas of importance and
ensures that these areas are managed to ensure optimal environmental
outcomes.
- Employment of an environmental officer, to manage the EMS, and conduct
research on new ways to minimise environmental impacts.
- Improving production efficiency; this often has beneficial
environmental impacts. For example, innovations in wool grease recovery from
the wastewater stream allow us to maximise the amount of saleable woolgrease
we produce, and also make it easier to manage the resultant wastewater
stream.
- Research and development: GWS is committed to the concept of 'continuous
development'. This essentially means that we are constantly looking for
better technology, and where appropriate, incorporating that technology into
the facility. For example, we are actively trialling new detergents that have much
faster times of biodegradation than currently occurs.
- Environmentally beneficial management: GWS is committed to
rehabilitating unused land owned by the company, that was degraded before
our ownership.
