Dirt is produced from bale opening, and mud from scouring operations. These products are used to enhance impoverished soils, as it promotes the development of soil structure, and increases the availability of nutrients in soil.  Research is continuing into using these products (essentially dirt off the sheep's back) as soil fertiliser, as they are naturally rich in macronutrients, particularly potassium, as well as nitrogen.
